Progressive vs bifocal readers: which one actually suits you
The visible line, the image jump, the adaptation period and the cost — a plain comparison of the two lens types.
Ask ten people what the difference is between bifocal and progressive lenses and most will say something about the line. That is true as far as it goes, but the line is a symptom rather than the point. The real difference is how the lens gets from one focusing power to another, and that determines how the glasses feel to wear for eight hours.
How a bifocal works
A bifocal lens contains two distinct optical zones with a hard boundary between them. The upper portion carries one power, the lower segment carries another, and the transition happens instantaneously at the dividing line. Benjamin Franklin is usually credited with the idea, and the original version really was two half-lenses cemented together in one frame.
The advantage is optical purity. Within each zone the prescription is exactly what it should be edge to edge, with no distortion at the sides. For someone who reads a great deal at one fixed distance and looks up occasionally, a bifocal is efficient and cheap.
The disadvantage is the moment of crossing. As your eye passes the boundary the image jumps, because the two zones bend light by different amounts. Going down a flight of stairs, the step you are about to take can appear to shift position. Most wearers adapt within a week by learning to drop their chin instead of their eyes, but a minority never stops noticing it, and older wearers with any balance uncertainty often find the jump genuinely unsettling.
The other gap is the middle distance. A bifocal has near and far and nothing in between, which was fine when the intermediate world consisted of a bookshelf. It is much less fine when a laptop screen sits at arm's length for six hours a day, in the exact range neither zone covers.
How a progressive works
A progressive lens has no zones. The front surface is ground so that the curvature changes continuously from the top of the lens to the bottom, so the power increases smoothly along a corridor running down the centre. Look straight ahead and you use the distance portion; drop your gaze slightly for a monitor; drop further for a book.
There is no line, so no jump, and the intermediate distance is covered by definition because every power between the two extremes exists somewhere on the lens. That is the whole case for progressives, and for most people it is decisive.
The trade-off is geometry. Because the surface has to change curvature smoothly, the areas to either side of the central corridor carry some unwanted astigmatic distortion. In practice this shows up as a slight softness or swim in the peripheral vision when you first put them on, particularly when turning your head quickly. The corridor is narrower than the full lens width, so you learn to point your nose at what you want to read rather than sliding your eyes sideways.
Adaptation typically takes three to ten days. The advice that actually works is to wear them full time during that period rather than switching back and forth to old glasses, because the brain adapts to a consistent input much faster than to an alternating one.
The ready-made versions
Everything above describes prescription lenses made for one person's eyes. Off-the-shelf progressive readers apply the same principle in a simplified form: a fixed distance-to-near gradient with the same power in both eyes, sold in standard strengths.
They cannot correct astigmatism or a difference between the two eyes, and the corridor placement is an average rather than a measurement of where your pupils actually sit. In exchange they cost a fraction of a dispensed pair and can be bought this afternoon. For uncomplicated presbyopia this compromise works well, which is why the category has grown so quickly.
One point worth knowing when comparing products: some ready-made progressives put zero power at the top of the lens, and others put half the reading power there. The zero-top versions behave like a conventional progressive and are appropriate if your distance vision is good. The half-power versions are optimised for a desk, giving a sharper monitor and table-conversation range at the cost of blurring the far wall. Neither is better in the abstract, but buying the wrong one is the most common reason people conclude that progressives do not suit them.
A practical decision rule
If you read at one distance, rarely look up, and want maximum optical clarity for minimum money, a bifocal or single-strength reader is a rational choice. If your day involves a phone, a screen and a printed page in rotation, a progressive is worth the adaptation week, and the reduction in glasses-on-glasses-off friction is the benefit people report most often once they have made the switch.
Weight deserves a place in the decision too. The best lens design in the world is useless in a drawer, and heavier frames end up in drawers. A light rimless progressive gets worn continuously, and continuous wear is what makes the lens design pay off.
