Blue light and eye strain: separating the evidence from the marketing
What blue light does, what digital eye strain really is, and where a filtering lens helps.
Blue-light filtering is printed on almost every pair of glasses sold online, which is usually a sign that a claim has outrun its evidence. It is worth separating three different questions that marketing tends to blend into one: what blue light is, whether screens damage the eye, and why your eyes feel terrible after a long day of work.
What blue light actually is
Visible light spans roughly 380 to 700 nanometres, and the blue-violet end sits at the short, high-energy end of that range. The overwhelming majority of the blue light a person encounters comes from the sun; a laptop emits a tiny fraction of that. This is the first thing to hold on to when reading a product page. If daylight were acutely dangerous to the retina at these levels, we would have noticed long before monitors existed.
Blue light also does something useful. Specialised cells in the retina use short-wavelength light to set the body clock, which is why bright morning light helps people wake up and why the same light at midnight does not.
The damage question
Laboratory studies have shown that very intense blue light can harm retinal cells in isolated tissue and in animal models. Extrapolating from those intensities to the light coming off a phone is where the marketing goes wrong: the exposures involved are orders of magnitude apart. Large reviews of the clinical literature have repeatedly failed to find evidence that screen use at ordinary brightness causes retinal damage in humans.
So the honest position is that a blue-light filter is not protecting your retina from destruction, because your retina was not under that threat.
What digital eye strain really is
The discomfort is real even though the damage story is not. Digital eye strain has three main mechanical causes, none of which is wavelength.
First, blink rate. Concentrating on a screen roughly halves how often you blink, and the tear film that keeps the cornea optically smooth breaks up within seconds without blinking. That produces the gritty, burning, intermittently blurred feeling most people describe.
Second, sustained accommodation. Holding focus at a fixed near distance for hours keeps the ciliary muscle contracted. In an eye that is already losing accommodative range through presbyopia, that muscle is working close to its limit all day, and the ache above the eyebrows is the result.
Third, uncorrected or slightly wrong refraction. A small unaddressed error costs nothing at a distance but becomes exhausting when you are asking the eye to resolve nine-point text for six hours.
Notice that a correctly powered lens addresses the second and third causes directly. This is why people who buy blue-light glasses often do feel better — many of them bought lenses with reading power in them, and the power is doing the work.
Where filtering does earn its place
The defensible benefit is circadian rather than ocular. Evening exposure to short-wavelength light suppresses melatonin and delays sleep onset, and studies of blue-blocking eyewear in the hours before bed have shown modest improvements in sleep quality. If you read on a tablet at eleven at night, a filter is a reasonable thing to have.
There is also a comfort argument around glare and contrast that is harder to measure but consistently reported. A mild filter slightly reduces the scattering of short-wavelength light within the eye, and some people find screens easier to look at as a result. It is a small effect, and it varies between individuals.
The practical conclusion is undramatic: do not pay a premium for blue-light filtering on its own, but there is no reason to avoid it either, and when it is included in a lens you were buying anyway for its reading power, you may as well have it.
What to change first
Before buying anything, fix the mechanics. Put the screen slightly below eye level and about an arm's length away, so the eyelid covers more of the eye's surface and the tear film lasts longer. Take a twenty-second look at something across the room every twenty minutes. Match screen brightness to the room rather than running it at maximum in a dark office. Use preservative-free artificial tears if your eyes feel dry by mid-afternoon.
Then get the reading power right. That single change does more for end-of-day comfort than any coating on the market, and it is the reason a good pair of progressive readers is a better purchase than a cheap pair of amber-tinted lenses with no correction at all.
